This project takes place at an operational landfill just south of Santiago, Chile that serves a population of approximately 21,200,000 inhabitants. Like most landfills, this site throws off methane as some of the waste decomposes. Credits are generated from two pieces of the project: (1) avoiding the emissions of methane (a potent greenhouse gas) into the atmosphere and (2) using the power generated from the methane (natural gas) to displace dirtier fossil-fuel generated power within the Chilean electric grid–the Chilean Interconnected Central System The projects has a current installed capacity of 19.66MW, with plans to increase to 28MW as the project expands and the amount of biogas capture does as well. The project activity is uncommon in Chile, and project documentation makes clear that revenue from carbon credits was considered and important to project development.
Gold Standard (GS 3976)
This project has little to no risk of reversal because its avoided emissions are not subject to being undone.
